Santa Claus travels around the world in a single night. It took Gansu Song and Dance Theatre a little longer.
The Chinese troupe recently performed the award-winning show Silk Road, Flower Rain for a packed house at Salisbury University, courtesy of World Artist Experiences, Inc. Because Santa is not as well known in their native country as he is in the United States, SU’s Office of Cultural Affairs called on the Salisbury Jaycees to arrange a personal backstage visit.

Imagine waking up as a child on Christmas… and not receiving any presents. That could be a reality for some area children without the help of the Salisbury Jaycees.
Each year, the chapter takes some 200 underprivileged kids holiday shopping during the Children’s Christmas Shopping Tour, thanks to funds raised by the Salisbury Jaycees Foundation. Participating children are recommended by their school guidance counselors. Nearly 200 volunteers from Salisbury University, the Salisbury Baptist Temple and other community institutions and organizations recently helped make the 39th installment of this event possible.

Everybody loves a parade… including the Salisbury Jaycees! In fact, we love them so much that we’ve held our own each year since 1947.
Celebrating its 65th year this winter, the annual Salisbury Jaycees Christmas Parade, “A Green Christmas,” featured Grand Marshal Stacey Weisner, executive director of the Salisbury Zoological Society. The festive event showcased more than 75 entries including local dignitaries, fire trucks, marching bands, the perennially popular Eastern Correctional Institution float and, of course, Santa Claus, joined by Saul the Salisbury Jaycees Bear!

’Tis the season for giving! The Salisbury Jaycees recently assisted with the First Baptist Church of Fruitland’s annual community Thanksgiving dinner, performing tasks from carving turkeys and slicing pies to helping out on the serving line. But one day isn’t nearly enough to help serve the needs of the community… and beyond.
For that reason, the Jaycees also have made donated to several local charities, including food banks in Wicomico and Talbot counties, the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office’s annual holiday adopt-a-family campaign and St. Francis de Sales Boy Scout Troop 185. Individually, members also have contributed to Operation We Care, Toys For Tots and the Crisfield Kiwanis Club’s annual Christmas toy drive.

Some stores started their Black Friday sales at 8 p.m on Thanksgiving. What madness was that?
Fortunately for those who had to go into work early that evening, wanted to get a jumpstart on the lines outside the stores or were unable to make it home for other reasons this year (and for those who just wanted two turkey dinners in a five-day span), the Salisbury Jaycees’ annual pre-Thanksgiving dinner provided an opportunity to celebrate the holiday early.

The Jaycee Creed
We Believe...
That faith in God gives
meaning and purpose to human life;
That the brotherhood of man
transcends the sovereignty
of nations;
That economic justice
can best be won
by free men through free enterprise;
That government should be of laws
rather than of men;
That Earth's great treasure
lies in human personality;
And that service to humanity
is the best work of life.
